Forget the original factory powerplant. This Thing features a performance-oriented 2110cc air-cooled stroker engine with dual carburetors, 90.5mm pistons and cylinders, an Engle 120 camshaft, 041 performance cylinder heads and an 8-dowel forged crankshaft. Solid shaft rockers, a lightened flywheel, heavy-duty oil pump and full-flow oiling system round out the build. A serious upgrade for enthusiasts who appreciate custom air-cooled Volkswagen performance.
DOCUMENTED RESTORATION
This Type 181 has undergone extensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration, with documentation available for review. Approximately 1,300 miles have been accumulated since the restoration. Custom fabrication, upgraded mechanical components and distinctive exterior details help set it apart from typical surviving examples.
ULTIMATE OPEN-AIR CLASSIC
Few vintage vehicles offer the character of a Volkswagen Thing. Its removable doors, folding windshield and convertible soft top create a unique open-air driving experience. Military-inspired styling, upright bodywork and unmistakable Type 181 proportions make it a conversation starter at shows, cruise nights and weekend outings.
CUSTOM DETAILS AND CHARACTER
A custom roll bar, custom bumpers and performance suspension upgrades complement the built engine. This is a classic Volkswagen with personality, whether parked at a car show or enjoyed on a sunny afternoon.
A RARE AMERICAN-MARKET VOLKSWAGEN
The Volkswagen Thing was sold in the United States for the 1973 and 1974 model years. Its short U.S. sales run and unconventional design have made it a memorable part of air-cooled VW history.
CLASSIC VEHICLE INFORMATION
As a modified 1974 classic, this vehicle differs significantly from modern production vehicles. We encourage interested buyers to review the restoration documentation, inspect the vehicle and discuss its modifications and condition with our team.
